Originally it was the western part of what was known as the town of Owensmouth, which was founded March 30, 1912. The name was then changed to Canoga Park in 1931, and West Hills was defined as a separate area in 1987. Tarzana 91356

Tarzana, a neighborhood nestled in the central southern side of the San Fernando Valley is unique in its beauty and history. Tarzana is also famous for its connections to the iconic fictional character Tarzan, the area having been bought by Edgar Rice Burroughs, the writer of "Tarzan" series, in 1919 and named "Tarzan Ranch". In 1923, the city of Los Angeles had spread to the point of completely surrounding Tarzana Ranch, when Burroughs sold a large portion of it for home sites. In 1930, a post office was established in the community, and the 300 residents held a contest to find a name for the new community. The winning entry was "Tarzana’".
